The Planning

I first met Sheena and Brent when they won a Family Photo Session with me a few years ago. When I received Sheena’s email to ask if I would be interested in capturing their DIY wedding I was truly honoured!

Sheena and Brent have a gorgeous family home in Pokeno, and had decided on a backyard DIY wedding. I drove down to Pokeno, the following weekend to talk through their ceremony plans and where we would take their photos. I really enjoy getting to meet with my couples before their wedding as it allows us to get to know each other, and also put a bit of a plan in place so they know they can relax on the day.

Unlike a lot of Bride’s, Sheena was happy to share the spotlight on her special day.  She had given Brent full creative licence when it came to what he was wearing. With great excitement, Brent told me he had ordered a “crazy” suit from England for the wedding. I wasn’t exactly sure what that meant but as you can see from the photos, Brent was not joking! For herself, Sheena chose a beautiful white princess gown from AliExpress. Proof that a wedding can be organised in a short space of time, within your own budget and to your own taste.

The big day

Fast forward a few short weeks, and it was Sheena and Brent’s wedding! I was so excited to hang out with Sheena and Brent and get to know their extended family and friends.

Inside the house was a hive of activity. Hair and makeup were in full swing, kids were happily playing outside; and family members were busily organising the finishing touches. I spent time capturing the small details before hanging out with Brent and Sheena as they got ready. It wasn’t long before guests arrived and it was time for Sheena to make her way to the top of the aisle.

Watching the groom’s reaction to his bride is my favourite part of any wedding ceremony. I am usually capturing their reaction from the top of the aisle, so I have both their reaction and the bride walking in my shot. Once the bride reaches her groom it’s like an instant calm falls over the wedding. It’s beautiful to witness.

The ceremony was officiated by Nikayla Jane and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house! Sheena and Brent had us all laughing, crying and cheering along with them as they said their vows, and Nikayla pronounced them man and wife!

After the ceremony

Sheena and Brent hopped in their wedding car, and we headed out to a local waterfall just a short drive from their home.

Heading off-site for couple portraits is a great opportunity to spend some time together away from your guests, and take in the fact that you’re now husband and wife. It’s also the perfect opportunity for you to get some photos without worrying about any prying eyes watching you – something that I know a lot of bride and grooms are conscious of.

Sheena and Brent’s time at the waterfall was a lot of fun! They popped a bottle of champagne, and spent some time talking about their favourite parts of the day so far. We then all headed back to the house where Sheena and Brent’s guests were waiting for them to cut their cake.

It was a beautiful day, full of love and happy memories and I feel so privileged to have been a part of it. It was also great to see a DIY wedding first hand, and a no-fuss, no-frills approach to tying the knot!

Congratulations again Mr & Mrs Mannering!
