Kia Ora, I’m Sarah!
It’s pretty hard to summarise what you’re all about in a few words but I’ll give it a go …
I’m Sarah, a professional wedding, baby and family photographer from West Yorkshire in the UK. I live in Auckland with my partner Roy, and our fur baby Monty, a rescue cat who adopted us three years ago.
Roy and I initially arrived in New Zealand with a backpack and a zest for adventure! Little did we know we would fall in love with Aotearoa and make it our home. We are very proud to be adopted kiwis.
I love family time, great friends, exploring New Zealand and enjoying a glass of red wine as the sun goes down.
When I was younger I had a LOT of disposable film cameras and I took one with me everywhere I went. I loved capturing candid photos of my friends and family, much to their annoyance and protest at times. There was something about freezing time, and having lasting memories that excited me! It was usually an agonising two-week wait to get them developed by my local print house, but boy was it worth the wait when I finally got them back!
Fast forward a few years, and I upgraded to a Sony Cybershot with built-in flash – what a game changer! Although I’m sure my friends and family are grateful that social media didn’t exist at this point, I was so excited to see that little photo appear on the back of my camera, and the delete button also gave me the opportunity to experiment much more freely.
And then I left home, armed with a backpack another Sony, my eyes were truly opened to the outside world. The amazing landscapes, the wonderful people and the cultures of countries I had only ever experienced through my TV. I was mesmerised and at that point I saw photography as my way of sharing my travel adventures with family and friends at home.
And then I got a bit older, and I stumbled into a career in events and marketing. And one day, while I was sitting at my desk thinking about how much I wished I could just be outside with my camera, I decided that it was time to make my photography dream a reality. And now I have “officially” photographed weddings, families and babies for four years and I haven’t looked back!
It’s the expressions, emotions and moments between individuals, that draws me to photographing people specifically – and so being a wedding photographer and family photographer is a perfect match! I also love capturing new family dynamics so working with children, and babies is something I really enjoy!
How do I work?
Candid, natural photography is what I’m all about – I offer a little direction, usually chuck in some fun games, occasionally get down on the floor and roll around with the kids and generally try and make your photo experience with me fun and enjoyable. And while you’re busy wondering why you’re sniffing the head of your best mate, I’m watching the light, image composition and the angle in which I’m shooting, to ensure that the final images are flattering, as well as natural and authentic.
I also take the time to get to know you a little; whether that’s a phone call, a chat over Skype or grabbing a coffee or wine before big events, like your wedding! This really helps me to understand what exactly you want from your pictures and allows me to identify and advise on any forward planning that may be required to bring your vision to life. It’s also a great way to make sure we “click” before your big day, as the more relaxed you are the better your photos will be.
My editing style is relatively light, but with desaturated tones. Have a browse around my site to see what this looks like in practice.
I usually photograph around Auckland, however, I happily travel further afield as it provides me an excuse to get out of the city and explore new places that I may have never been to!
I absolutely LOVE what I do and I really do hope that this comes across, as you browse through my website.
So….if you’re looking for someone to document your wedding or your family time, then please do get in touch – I’d love to help.
